Jason Shaffer
Engineer/Mixer/Producer bio
January 2008
As a kid growing up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Jason Shaffer didn’t hear a lot of interesting music on the radio. But then he found his mother’s stash of classic vinyl, and a life-long love affair with music was born. Records by The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash and Credence Clearwater Revival were especially influential.
He started playing guitar and by age 15 was in his own band. A curious person by nature, he also wanted to figure out how to record music. He created his own multitrack recordings by using a karaoke machine and bouncing the tape back and forth. Eventually he acquired a 4-track cassette recorder, which led to his desire to learn all he could about recording.
After high school, he left for Florida to attend the nation’s premiere audio recording teaching facility, Full Sail. He thrived in this environment, learning all he could about his craft and the latest state-of-the-art gear while soaking in every style of music from rock to jazz to R&B, funk and country.
Returning to PA in 2002, Jason interned and later worked for the noted engineer and producer Bill Grabowski, best known for his work with Bon Jovi early in their career. He then moved on to Scott Wray Studios in the Harrisburg, PA area where he quickly built a reputation for competency, working well with clients and staying on schedule while keeping an eye on budgets. He soon became the studio’s chief engineer, working with such individuals as Jeff Feltenberger (x-Badlees), Tom "T-Bone" Edmonds (Lenny Kravitz FOH engineer) and national recording artists Jesse Yawn and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.
During this time, Jason saw the need for a quality studio that would be cost effective for local musicians. When Scott Wray closed for relocation, he began recording bands in his apartment. His clients were amazed at the sound quality he was able to provide. Now with the main studio reopened as After 7 Studios, Jason has access to all the equipment and facilities he needs in order to handle virtually any situation.

Terry Selders of Susquehanna Entertainment says that "Jason is a rare talent. He has a great work ethic, knows the gear, gets things done, and has a great ear to boot. He literally saved my Christmas CD a couple years ago. I’ve watched how he is like a sponge, learning all he can from the people around him and then applying that knowledge tastefully. He has my highest recommendation."
Jason keeps busy with projects at the 2 studios, and has joined with Bret Alexander (Badlees) and Jeremy Hummel (x-Breaking Benjamin) to form a new band called Giants Of Despair.
He is available as an engineer, mixer and/or producer for recording projects, and can also assemble almost any combination of musicians for session work or to act as a backing band. Some musicians have hired him to play bass or guitar with them live on stage. And as if that weren’t enough, he also enjoys running live sound for bands occasionally.
